Games Industry Law Firm Expands Into South America
Interactive Entertainment Law Group of North America Announces Merger with Bedoya & Visbal Abogados in Colombia
The Interactive Entertainment Law Group, one of the largest game-specific legal teams in North America, has expanded into South America by announcing its merger with Colombia-based firm Bedoya & Visbal Abogados.
Patrick Sweeney, founder and head of the Los Angeles-based IE Law Group said, “Our client base in South America has been consistently growing over the past few years. It makes sense to expand our services to reach deeper into this important region. When I thought about the best way to do that, the fit with Bedoya & Visbal Abogados was an obvious choice. They have the largest game presence in Colombia and one of the strongest client rosters in South America. I’ve had the privilege of working with them as co-counsel on multiple matters, and I’m looking forward to working with them on a more integrated basis as we advance.”
Since its inception seven years ago, IE Law Group has worked with over 350 clients across the United States and 25 countries globally includingIron Galaxy, Pik Pok, Xsolla, Boss Fight, Efecto, and Dreams Uncorporated. Bedoya & Visbal, now known as IE Law Group-South America, has worked with approximately 30 clients hailing from 5 countries within the region, including South American studios such as Brainz (now Jam City~Bogota),Teravision, AOne, Game Ever, and Timba.
“Becoming part of the IE Law Group family is a unique opportunity for our team as well as our client base to combine our regional knowledge and expertise with IE Law Group’s network and collective wisdom on international deal-making. We are excited to work closely with Patrick and the rest of the team,” noted Jorge Bedoya, Founding Partner of Bedoya & Visbal Abogados. “We look forward to welcoming Patrick back to Colombia and working together to continue serving the games industry in South America,” added Bedoya & Visbal Managing Partner Maria Carolina Visbal.
In the past five years, there has been a growing ecosystem of high quality development studios in the region. As these studios continue to emerge on a global stage, this strategic merger becomes a logical extension as IE Law Group team will help these companies develop and publish their games throughout the world.
In addition, most of the national and local governments throughout South America (particularly in Colombia) are providing significant support to their constituent companies. The expectation is that this region will continue to grow exponentially in the coming years. As a result of this merger, the entire IE Law Group team is now even better positioned to continue supporting that growth.
