Epic originally launched the Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) beta back at GDC in March 2023, Now Epic has announced the launch of Fab, in an effort to better consolidate assets for content creators.
Epic has had several asset sources available for game developers and animators, including Unreal Engine Marketplace, Quixel, ArtStation Marketplace, and Sketchfab Store.
The Fab website is live, and soon, Unreal Engine 5 Editor users will be able to access it directly within the app after an upcoming update. Fab will also be integrated with Unreal Editor for Fortnite, although it’s currently undergoing maintenance.
Features of Fab
Fab offers a variety of game development assets, including:
- Animations
- Visual effects (VFX)
- Environments
- Characters
- Plug-ins
Assets are available under two licensing models: Creative Commons and Standard License. The Standard License has Personal and Professional tiers, both allowing the use of assets in any game engine. Assets under the Creative Commons license, however, are restricted to Unreal Engine use only. Additionally, developers can preview 3D assets in real time before purchasing.
Free Assets and Offers
As part of the Fab launch, Epic Games is offering the full Quixel Megascans library for free until the end of the year. These assets are free to use in any engine or creative tool. The library includes 17,000 assets from the original Megascans collection, along with 10 new packs available for Fab’s launch.
Future Expansion Plans
Epic Games plans to expand Fab’s offerings to include assets for platforms like Roblox and Minecraft, as well as provide access to MetaHumans. Starting next year, part of Fab’s Megascans content will be made available for free through a starter pack.
