  • Company to build the metaverse says CEO Mark Zuckerberg

Last week in an interview with The Verge, Mark Zuckerberg told the publication, “You can think about the metaverse as an embodied internet, where instend of just viewing content – you are in it.”

Facebook has set up a new product team within the company to focus on the metaverse which enables users to communicate between platforms and communicate in virtual space. The newly created team will be part of the virtual reality group, known as the Facebook Reality Labs. As Facebook executive Andrew Bosworth who runs the Facebook Reality Labs commented in a post:

“The metaverse is already here as a collection of digital worlds each with its own physics to determine what’s possible within them. The defining quality of the metaverse will be presence — the feeling of really being there with people — and FRL has been focused on building products that deliver presence across digital spaces for years. Today Portal and Oculus can teleport you into a room with another person, regardless of physical distance, or to new virtual worlds and experiences. But to achieve our full vision of the metaverse, we also need to build the connective tissue between these spaces — so you can remove the limitations of physics and move between them with the same ease as moving from one room in your house to the next.”

The new product team will be headed up by Vishal Shah whom Facebook brought in from Istagram. Additionally, Vivek Sharma will head up the Horizon teams coming from Facebook Gaming, and Jason Rubin will lead the content team.

In a company post on Monday Zuckerberg said, “I believe the metaverse will be the successor to the mobile internet, and creating this product group is the next step in our journey to help build it.”

And as he discussed with The Verge: “If we do this well, I think over the next five years or so … we will effectively transition from people seeing us as primarily being a social media company to being a metaverse company.”
