Irish video game studio Vela Games has announced significant job cuts due to financial underperformance. The Dublin-based company, established in 2017, is believed to have employed around 60 to 65 staff members, with approximately 50 individuals facing layoffs according to the Financial Services Union. The studio released its first multiplayer competitive game, Evercore Heroes, last year and received funding of more than €14.1 million. The company’s statement indicated a phased reduction in team size over the coming months, attributing the move to ensure responsible pursuit of their game’s vision.
This follows a trend of layoffs in the Irish gaming sector, including Electronic Arts and GameStop.
